Banana Leaf Restaurant

Overview

Banana Leaf is a restaurant on Naz Street in Port Louis, located in the Pearl House building. It's a haven for gourmets seeking authenticity. Sathuda Armourdon Pillay, the restaurant's owner, says the menu is directly inspired by Tamil cuisine "as it is prepared at home." Steaming rice is served behind the main counter to accompany the day's dishes on beautiful banana leaf-shaped plates. On Monday, there are lentils, deer and chicken egg rougaille, fish stew or curry of large peas with eggplant, soy vindaye and sautéed vegetables, chili achard, and coconut chutney, as well as lentils, deer and chicken egg rougaille, fish stew or curry of large peas with eggplant, soy vindaye and sautéed vegetables, chili achard, and coconut chutney. Depending on the day, dholl fricassee, eggplant, and mouroum stick, soy with mushrooms, venison rougaille, curry and deer, and chicken salmis are on the menu. Banana Leaf also has its own signature dishes, such as the Virindu curry, which is served on Wednesdays and consists of curry of goat offal, stale eggplant, lettuce... It's easy to imagine the plates being particularly full and colorful. Each dish is traditionally served with a glass of Panacon, a traditional sweet drink made with lime, orange, and cardamom juice. Banana Leaf's menu has been adapted for Tamil Lent at the moment. Every day, a vegetarian specialty is served, such as kitcheri, eggplant, chouchou, malbar brede, meeti, tamarind rice, Canjee rice, or the famous 7 cari madras.
